Photographing Farms, Land and Agricultural Operations

Agriculture is a significant part of what South Georgia is, and photographing it well takes a different approach than photographing a storefront.

Scale is the challenge

The thing that makes a farm impressive — how much of it there is — is exactly what a ground-level photo cannot convey. A field looks like a field from eye level regardless of whether it is five acres or five hundred.

That is where aerial work earns its place. Elevation is what communicates scale, boundaries and the relationship between the parts of an operation.

Light on land

Low sun is everything here. Midday flattens terrain completely — rows disappear, texture goes away, and a field reads as a green rectangle. Early morning and late evening give you shadow and shape, and the same field looks like a different place.

Seasonality

• Planting and early growth, which shows the rows and the work
• Peak season, which shows the operation at its fullest
• Harvest, which is the most dynamic and the hardest to schedule
• Bare ground, which shows the land itself for a listing or a sale

For a listing, bare or dormant ground can actually be better, because a buyer wants to see the land rather than somebody else's crop.

Equipment and people

The machinery is part of the story and it photographs well in the right light. So do the people, and an operation photographed with nobody in it feels abandoned. Working shots — equipment in motion, dust, actual work happening — carry considerably more than a parked tractor.

For land sales

Aerial stills showing boundaries, access, water and improvements are what buyers actually want. Ground-level images of the entrance, any structures and the road frontage fill it out. A land listing with three ground photos undersells a property in a way that costs real money on a sale.

Safety and access

Working operations have equipment moving, livestock, and areas where standing is a bad idea. Coordinating with somebody who knows the operation keeps everybody safe and gets access to the right places. Airspace also has to be checked for aerial work, which is part of planning rather than something to sort out on arrival.

What it gets used for

Listings, operation websites, agritourism marketing, grant and loan applications, succession documentation, and family records. Several of those have different requirements, so it is worth saying which apply.
