Stop Buying One Photo at a Time

September 1, 20266 min read32 Productions · Douglas, GA

The pattern most small businesses fall into is buying images reactively — a headshot when somebody joins, a product shot when a listing needs one, a photo when a print piece is due.

The result is a mismatched collection that never quite covers what is needed. A planned library solves it in one session.

Start from where images get used

Write the list before booking anything:

  • Website — hero, services pages, about, team, contact
  • Google Business Profile
  • Social profiles and regular posts
  • Paid ads, which need multiple variations to test against each other
  • Print — brochures, signage, vehicle graphics
  • Proposals, decks and email

That list determines orientation, crop and how much variety you need. It is the difference between a set that covers everything and one that covers the website.

Shoot for aspect ratios deliberately

A website banner needs wide horizontal with space for text. Social needs square and vertical. Print needs resolution and often a different crop.

Shooting each key subject in multiple orientations costs almost no extra time on the day and prevents the common problem of having no usable version for a specific placement.

Leave room for text

Images that will carry headlines need negative space. A perfectly composed frame with the subject dead center is unusable as a hero image with copy over it.

Telling the photographer which images need text space changes how they are framed.

The core subjects

  1. 1.The owner and the team, individually and together
  2. 2.The space or the vehicles, exterior and interior
  3. 3.The work being done, in progress, not just finished
  4. 4.The finished result
  5. 5.Details and texture, which fill gaps in layouts
  6. 6.Customers or clients where appropriate and permitted

Process photos — work actually happening — are the most useful and least commonly shot. Finished-result photos look like everyone else's. A photo of your crew doing the thing is specific to you.

Plan for a year

Think about what you will need over the next twelve months rather than what you need this week. Seasonal campaigns, a new service, a hiring push — each needs images and each is cheaper to shoot now than to schedule separately later.

Keep it organized

A library nobody can search is not a library. Name files usefully, keep them somewhere the whole team can reach, and note any usage restrictions with them.

The most common waste is paying for images twice because nobody could find the originals.

Refresh, do not replace

A library does not need rebuilding annually. Adding to it as the team and the work change, with a fuller refresh every couple of years, keeps it current without repeating the whole cost.
