Media for Churches and Nonprofits on a Real Budget

November 10, 20266 min read32 Productions · Douglas, GA

Churches, nonprofits and community organizations need media as much as businesses do and usually have less to spend on it. The right approach is different as a result.

What actually needs to be professional

  • A strong set of photos of the space, the people and the work being done
  • Portraits of leadership and staff
  • One good annual piece — a recap film or an appeal video
  • Images for the website and the profile, which are frequently badly out of date

Those get used continuously. Weekly content does not need the same production.

What to do in-house

Regular social posts, service or event announcements, and day-to-day updates. A phone and a small amount of guidance produces perfectly good material for those.

The useful arrangement is professional work for the anchor assets and a documented, simple approach for everything else — including telling volunteers what to shoot and how to frame it.

Telling the story honestly

The most effective nonprofit media shows real people and real work rather than staged scenes. Donors and members respond to specificity.

That said, dignity matters. Photographing people receiving help requires consent and care, and images that make somebody look like a subject rather than a person do damage even when they raise money.

Consent and minors

Organizations working with children need a clear policy on photography and publication, and it needs to be in place before the camera arrives rather than negotiated on the day. The same applies to anyone in a vulnerable situation.

An annual photo session covering the space, the people and the work gives an organization a library that feeds the website, the newsletter, the appeal and social for the whole year. That is usually a better use of a limited budget than several small one-off shoots.

Video for appeals

A short film showing the work and the people it affects outperforms a letter for most organizations. It does not need to be elaborate — it needs to be honest and specific. The most common mistake is a video about the organization rather than about the work, and people give to outcomes.

Archive it

Organizations lose their own history constantly as volunteers and staff change. Keeping images somewhere central and organized, with dates and names, means the twenty-year anniversary piece is possible. Almost nobody does this and everybody wishes they had.

Practical budgeting

Tell us the budget and what it has to accomplish. There is usually a version of the work that fits, and it is a more useful conversation than pretending the constraint does not exist.
