Why an Engagement Session Is Worth the Time

Engagement sessions get treated as an optional add-on. They are one of the more useful things a couple can do before a wedding, and the reasons are practical rather than sentimental.
It is a rehearsal
Most couples have never been professionally photographed together. The engagement session is where they find out how it feels, learn how the photographer works, and get comfortable being directed.
The result shows on the wedding day. Couples who have done a session are visibly more relaxed in front of the camera, and relaxed is what good photos are made of.
You learn how you photograph together
Which side each person prefers, how they naturally stand, what makes them laugh, what to do with hands. A photographer who has already shot you knows those things on the wedding day rather than figuring them out during a fifteen-minute portrait window.
You actually use the images
- Save-the-dates and invitations
- A wedding website
- Display at the reception
- Guest book or sign-in album
- Social announcements
- Something on the wall that is not a wedding photo
Those are real uses, and phone photos do not serve them well.
It tests the working relationship
If something about how the photographer works does not suit you, finding that out at an engagement session is enormously better than finding it out on the wedding day.
Book the engagement session far enough ahead that the images are ready in time for save-the-dates. Working backward from when those need to go out is what determines the date, and couples routinely leave it too late.
Where to shoot it
Somewhere that means something. Where you met, where the proposal happened, the family place, or simply somewhere you both like being. Those produce better images than a location chosen for being photogenic.
Around here that could be downtown Douglas, open farmland at golden hour, or somewhere on the family land.
What to wear
Two outfits is plenty — one dressed up, one relaxed. Coordinate rather than match. Comfortable shoes if there is walking, and something you actually feel good in, because that is visible.
Timing
Golden hour, as with nearly everything. In a South Georgia summer that means early evening. Spring and fall give more forgiving conditions and more comfortable weather for standing outside dressed up.
Bring what is yours
A dog, a truck, an instrument. The engagement session is the informal one, which makes it the right place for the details that would look out of place in wedding formals.
