Family Sessions With Small Children, Realistically

Family sessions with young children go well when everyone's expectations match reality, and badly when parents expect four people to look at a camera and smile simultaneously for forty minutes.
The perfect-posed frame is one shot, not the session
You will probably get the one where everybody is looking and smiling. You will get it in a burst of about four seconds, and it will be one image out of the session.
The rest of the gallery — the ones families actually love in ten years — comes from interaction. Kids being carried, parents laughing at something, a toddler running out of frame while everyone reacts.
Timing is not negotiable with small kids
Schedule around naps and meals. A tired or hungry toddler is a scheduling problem, not a patience problem, and no photographer solves it in the moment.
Late afternoon after a nap, or early morning, tends to work. Right before dinner does not.
Feed them and bring snacks
Obvious and constantly ignored. Something they like, that is not going to end up on their clothes, available for the moment it is needed.
Let them be kids
The instruction to sit still and smile produces the tight, fake expression everybody recognizes. Letting a child move, play and interact produces real expressions, and a photographer who works that way gets far better frames.
If a two-year-old refuses to cooperate, that is normal. The photos of the refusal frequently end up being favorites.
Parents who stay relaxed get better photos. Kids read stress instantly, and a parent hissing at a child to behave is visible in the frame even when the child is smiling.
What to wear
- Coordinate rather than match — a shared palette rather than identical shirts
- Comfortable clothes kids can actually move in
- Nothing brand new, which children fidget with
- A spare outfit for the youngest
- Solids and simple patterns
Keep it short
A session with small children has a working window and it is shorter than with adults. Front-load the important groupings — the whole family, then grandparents if they are there — and do the relaxed frames afterward when everyone has loosened up.
Trying to extend past the window produces nothing usable and everybody leaves unhappy.
Extended family
Large group photos take longer than anyone expects. Somebody blinks, somebody looks away, somebody's child has left. Doing the big group first, while everybody is fresh and present, is the single best decision on a multi-generation shoot.
What matters in ten years
Not whether everybody was looking. Whether the photo looks like your family at that age. That is the standard worth shooting for.
