Golden Hour: Why We Care So Much About the Time

When we push back on a session time, it is not about convenience. Light in south Georgia at midday and light at seven in the evening are completely different tools.

What midday light does

• It comes from directly overhead, which puts shadows in eye sockets and under noses.
• It is harsh, producing hard-edged shadows and blown highlights at the same time.
• It makes people squint.
• It flattens colour rather than enriching it.
• In August it is also genuinely uncomfortable, and discomfort shows.

What golden hour does

Low sun means light arrives across the subject rather than down onto them. It is softer because it travels through more atmosphere, it is warmer in colour, and it separates a subject from the background in a way overhead light cannot.

It also lasts a short time, which is why the schedule matters. The window moves through the year and it is shorter than people assume.

When midday is unavoidable

1. 1.Open shade — under a canopy, on the shaded side of a building — which is even and flattering.
2. 2.Backlighting, putting the sun behind the subject and exposing for the face.
3. 3.Overcast, which is genuinely excellent light and which people wrongly treat as a problem.
4. 4.Indoors near a large window.
5. 5.Fill light, which we bring.

Planning around it

Book earlier in the season rather than later, allow more time than the session strictly needs, and be flexible about the exact start. And if a location only works at a particular time of day, say so — we will plan around it.
