How to Prepare for a Photo Session

The difference between a session that produces a handful of usable frames and one that produces a gallery you actually want to print is mostly decided before anyone picks up a camera. Here is what matters.

Timing beats everything

Light is the single biggest variable and it is free. The hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset give you soft, directional, flattering light. Midday sun in South Georgia is harsh, high and unforgiving — it puts shadows under eyes and makes everyone squint.

If a midday session is unavoidable, open shade or an indoor setup solves it. But when you have the choice, book the golden hour and the photos will be better before anything else is decided.

What to wear

• Solid colors and simple patterns photograph better than busy prints, which pull attention and date quickly
• Coordinate rather than match — a family in identical shirts reads as a uniform, a family in a shared palette reads as intentional
• Layers and texture add depth that flat fabric does not
• Avoid large logos and graphics unless the shoot is about the brand
• Bring a second option if you are unsure, because seeing it on location settles it in ten seconds
• Comfortable shoes if we are moving between locations

Bring the things that make it yours

Props and personal objects are what separate a portrait of a person from a portrait of anyone. An instrument, a truck, a jersey, a set of tools, a dog. Those frames are the ones people keep.

Kids and timing

Schedule around naps and meals, not around convenience. A tired toddler is not a photography problem, it is a scheduling problem, and no amount of patience fixes it in the moment.

Bring a snack and something familiar. Expect the first ten minutes to be warm-up rather than working time, and plan the session length accordingly.

Location

Think about what the background says. A location that means something to you produces better images than one chosen because it is photogenic — the field behind the family place, the shop, the porch.

If you want variety, two locations in one session is realistic. Four is not, once you count travel and changing.

Summer here brings afternoon storms that build fast and humidity that affects how everyone looks and feels. Overcast is not a problem — it is a giant softbox and it is frequently the best light of the day.

Have a backup plan and a backup date. Pushing a session into bad conditions to keep a date produces images nobody is happy with.

What to expect afterward

Editing takes time and it is where a good image becomes a finished one. Ask up front about turnaround, how many images you receive, how they are delivered and what print rights you have.

Getting that clear before the session prevents every awkward conversation after it.
