Photography or Video: What Your Business Actually Needs
June 9, 20266 min read32 Productions · Douglas, GA
Business owners ask which one they should buy, and the honest answer is that they solve different problems. Spending the whole budget on the wrong one is a common and expensive mistake.
What photography does well
Photos are fast to consume, easy to deploy and they work everywhere — website, listings, print, social, ads, packaging. Somebody sees a photo instantly, with no decision to make about whether to invest attention.
For a business, the core photo set is usually the same list: the team, the space, the product or work, and the owner. Those images get used continuously for years.
What video does well
Video communicates process, personality and scale in a way stills cannot. If your value is in how you do something, or in who you are, video carries it.
It also holds attention longer when it earns it, and it dominates on the platforms where discovery happens now.
The honest sequencing
For most small businesses that have neither, photography comes first. It is the foundation — you need images before you need a film, because the images go everywhere immediately and the website cannot wait.
Once the photo library exists, video is what differentiates you from competitors who also have photos.
The exception
If your business is genuinely about motion or process — construction, events, food preparation, performance, anything with a transformation — video first can be right, because a still of that work undersells it.
The most common waste is a single expensive video with no photo library behind it. The video runs for a season and then the website still has phone snapshots on every page.
Think in libraries, not in pieces
The businesses that get the most from this treat a shoot as building a library rather than producing one deliverable. A day of shooting that yields sixty usable stills and enough footage for several short pieces is worth considerably more than one polished thing.
That also changes how you plan the day — you shoot for the list of things you will need over the next year, not for the one thing you are thinking about today.
Where it actually gets used
- Website — hero, services, about, team
- Google Business Profile, which most businesses populate with nothing
- Social posts and profiles
- Paid ads, which need multiple variations to test
- Print, signage and vehicle wraps
- Proposals, decks and email
That list is worth writing before a shoot, because it determines aspect ratios, orientation and how much variety you need.
Budgeting realistically
A production company can build to nearly any budget, and the useful conversation is about what you need it to accomplish rather than a number in isolation. Tell us what the images and video have to do and we will tell you what that takes.
