How to Not Look Nervous on Camera

Almost nobody is naturally comfortable on camera. The people who look relaxed on screen mostly prepared rather than being born that way.
Do not memorize a script
This is the most common mistake. Memorized delivery produces the specific dead-eyed quality that reads as fake, and the moment someone loses their place they visibly panic.
Instead, know your three or four points and speak them naturally. Say them differently in each take. The edit picks the best version, which is impossible if every take is identical.
Answer in complete sentences
If a question is asked off camera and the answer is edited to stand alone, an answer that begins with yes or well, we do is unusable.
Restating the question inside the answer solves it: not yes, but we have been doing this in Douglas for eleven years. That single habit produces far more usable material than anything else on this list.
Expect to warm up
The first two or three takes are almost always throwaway. That is normal and it is planned for. Knowing that in advance removes the pressure to be perfect immediately, which is itself what makes people stiff.
Wardrobe
- Solid mid-tone colors, avoiding bright white and pure black
- No tight patterns, small stripes or fine checks, which can produce moire on camera
- Nothing that rustles against a lapel microphone
- Consider whether logo apparel is right for the piece
- Bring a second option, because seeing it against the background settles it fast
The practical things
Water nearby. Phone silenced, and out of your pocket. Know whether to look at the interviewer or at the lens, and ask if nobody has said.
If you make a mistake, stop, pause, and say the sentence again from the beginning. Do not apologize or explain — the pause makes it easy to cut.
Silence after you finish an answer feels excruciating and it is genuinely useful. Two seconds of quiet gives the editor a clean out point, and interviewers often stay silent on purpose because the best line frequently comes after the pause.
Say specific things
Generalities are unusable. We provide excellent customer service means nothing. A specific story about a specific job means something, and it is what viewers remember.
Come with two or three real examples. They will carry the piece.
