Print Your Photos Before You Lose Them

Every photographer has the same conversation. A client is thrilled with a gallery, downloads it, and five years later cannot find a single image from it.
Digital files are not permanent. They are convenient, and they disappear.
How galleries get lost
- A phone upgrade where the transfer missed a folder
- A laptop that failed with the only copy on it
- An online gallery that expired
- A cloud account that lapsed
- Files saved to a device nobody has anymore
- Simply not being able to find them among fifty thousand other photos
None of that happens to a print on a wall.
Download and back up immediately
The day you receive a gallery: download the full-resolution files and put them in at least two places, one of which is not the device you use daily.
Galleries have expiry dates. Assuming it will always be there is how people end up asking a photographer for files from a session six years ago.
Print the ones that matter
You do not need to print everything. Ten images on the wall and an album beats four hundred files nobody looks at.
Photographs on the wall get seen every day. Files get seen when somebody goes looking, which is rarely.
Where you print matters
Consumer print services vary widely in color accuracy and paper quality. An image that was color-corrected carefully can come back with a green cast from a cheap printer, and the client concludes the photo was bad.
Professional labs cost more and produce prints that match what the photographer delivered. For images that matter, that difference is worth it.
Ask your photographer where to print. Most have a lab they trust and many can order for you, which removes the color-management problem entirely.
Albums
An album is the format that survives. It gets handled, shown to people and passed down in a way a hard drive does not. For weddings especially, it is the deliverable families keep.
It also forces a selection, which is itself valuable — an album of forty images tells a story that a folder of eight hundred does not.
Longevity
Print quality, paper and where you hang it all affect how long a print lasts. Direct sunlight fades anything over time. Professional papers and inks hold up considerably better than consumer ones.
For anything you intend to keep for decades, that is worth asking about.
