Your Google Business Profile Is Mostly Empty

For most local businesses, more people see the Google Business Profile than see the website. It shows up first, it answers the immediate questions, and it is frequently the only thing somebody looks at before calling.
It is also usually neglected, with three photos uploaded when it was created and nothing since.
Photos are the part that matters
A profile with a handful of low-quality images competes against one with a full, current set. The set that actually helps covers:
- The exterior, so people can find you — recognizable from the road, in daylight
- The interior, so they know what walking in looks like
- The team, because faces build trust faster than anything else
- The work, product or space, in quantity
- The owner, which matters more for a small business than people think
- Anything that answers a question a customer would otherwise have to ask
Keep them current
A profile showing a storefront that was repainted three years ago, or a team that has changed, undermines confidence rather than building it. Refreshing photos periodically is low-effort and it signals an active business.
The rest of the profile
Complete every field. Hours including holiday hours. Services listed individually rather than as one blob. A description that says what you actually do and where. Attributes that apply to you.
The questions section is worth attention too — you can seed and answer the questions customers actually ask, which handles them before anyone calls.
Posts
Profile posts show recent activity. They do not need to be elaborate — a photo of recent work with two sentences is enough, and a profile that posts occasionally reads as a business that is operating.
The single highest-return hour most local businesses can spend on marketing is filling out their Google profile completely with real photos. It costs nothing and most competitors have not done it.
Reviews
Ask for them, consistently, and respond to all of them — good and bad. A thoughtful response to a critical review does more for a prospective customer than the review costs you.
Never buy reviews. Beyond the policy problem, they read as fake to anybody paying attention.
Where photography fits
A single session produces the whole set — exterior, interior, team, work, owner — and that set feeds the profile, the website, social and print at the same time.
Most businesses do not need a photographer on retainer. They need one good session that builds a library, and then occasional updates.
Consistency across platforms
Name, address, phone and hours should match everywhere they appear. Inconsistency is both a customer problem and a discoverability problem, and it accumulates as businesses move or change numbers without updating every listing.
