Questions Worth Asking Before You Book a Photographer

Every portfolio shows the best work somebody has ever produced. It tells you what they are capable of on a good day and very little about what working with them is like.
These questions tell you more.
Have you shot this specific thing before
A great portrait photographer is not automatically a great wedding photographer, and neither is automatically good at commercial product work. The disciplines overlap and they are not the same job.
Ask to see a full gallery from one job like yours, not a curated highlight reel from twenty.
What is the turnaround
Get it in writing. Turnaround is the single most common source of client frustration in this business, and it is entirely avoidable by agreeing it up front.
What exactly do I receive
- How many final images
- What resolution, and whether both web and print versions
- How they are delivered
- How long the gallery stays available
- Whether raw files are included, which they usually are not
- Print rights and what they cover
What happens if something goes wrong
Illness, equipment failure, weather. A professional has an answer — backup equipment, a network of colleagues who can cover, a rescheduling policy.
For a wedding especially, this is the question that matters most and the one people are most reluctant to ask.
Who is actually showing up
On larger operations, the person you meet is not always the person who shoots. That is not necessarily a problem and you should know it in advance.
A photographer who has clear answers to all of this, in writing, is telling you how they run their business. Vagueness on these points at the booking stage does not improve after you have paid.
Are you insured
For commercial work and for many venues, liability insurance is required. Plenty of venues will not allow a vendor on site without it.
How do you handle backups
Files get lost. A professional shoots to redundant media where the camera allows, backs up on the day, and keeps copies in more than one place until delivery.
This is worth asking about for anything unrepeatable.
What the contract says
Coverage or session length, deliverables, timeline, payment schedule, cancellation and rescheduling terms, and usage rights. A professional has one and expects you to read it.
The one that tells you the most
Ask what they would do differently if the budget were smaller, or what they would cut first. Somebody who answers thoughtfully understands what actually drives value in the work. Somebody who says nothing can be cut is selling rather than advising.
