Covering a Church Anniversary or Homecoming

Church anniversaries, homecomings and pastor appreciation services are some of the most photographed events in South Georgia and some of the least well documented. Everyone has a phone up, and nobody has a set of pictures the church can actually use next year. That is what booking coverage fixes.

What the church usually wants

• The service itself: the choir, the speakers, the presentation to the pastor, the congregation.
• A group photo of the whole church, which needs planning and a spot to stand.
• Portraits of the pastor and first lady, the deacons, the mothers of the church, the youth.
• The dinner on the grounds, which is where the candid pictures come from.
• Older members with their families. Those are the pictures that get asked for later.
• Video of the service for members who could not attend and for the archive.

Plan the group photo

The whole-church photo is the one that hangs in the fellowship hall for thirty years, and it is the one most likely to be rushed. Pick the spot ahead of time, usually the front steps or the sanctuary from the choir loft, and announce from the pulpit exactly when and where it happens. Right after the benediction, before anyone heads to the food, is the only time you will have everybody.

During the service

Coverage during the service is quiet and stays out of the aisle at the wrong moments. We shoot from the sides and the back with long lenses, move during songs rather than during prayer, and we ask the pastor beforehand about anything that should not be photographed. For video, one fixed camera on the pulpit and one moving camera for the choir and the congregation covers it, and we take audio from the board so the sermon and the songs are clear.

For the archive

A church that documents its anniversary every year builds a history. Deliver the photos in a folder the church keeps on its own drive, with the year in the name. In ten years that is a slideshow for the next milestone. We also build tribute and history videos from old photographs for anniversaries, and it is easier when the archive already exists.

Streaming it

Homecomings bring in members who have moved away, and the ones who could not come want to watch. If the church already streams, we can run it that day; if not, a one-time livestream is a small addition to the coverage. Pastor appreciation and portraits

Pastor appreciation services often want a formal portrait of the pastor and the first lady, and sometimes of the pastor's family, for the program, the fellowship hall and the church website. It is better done a week or two before at the studio or in the sanctuary on a weekday, when there is time to light it properly and nobody is waiting. On the day itself, a quick portrait at the altar after the service works as a backup.

Programs, banners and graphics

Anniversary programs, a banner for the front of the sanctuary, a slide for the screen and a social graphic announcing the day are all built from the same design, and they look far better when they use last year's photographs than when they use clip art.
