Rain Plans: What Happens When South Georgia Does What It Does

Between June and September an afternoon storm is more likely than not, and a session scheduled without a plan for it is a session that gets cancelled by text an hour beforehand.

Rain is not automatically the problem

Overcast is genuinely good light. Light rain can be worked with and occasionally produces the best pictures of a session. What does not work is heavy rain, lightning, or wind strong enough to make anything unsafe.

The judgement is about safety and about whether the pictures will be good, not about whether it is dry.

How we plan

• Book earlier in the day during storm season, before the afternoon pattern develops.
• Identify a covered or indoor alternative when the location is agreed rather than when the sky changes.
• Agree a decision point — a time by which we call it — so nobody is standing about waiting.
• Keep the following week's slot flexible where the schedule allows.
• For weddings, plan the rain version properly, because a wedding does not reschedule.

Weddings specifically

A wedding rain plan is not optional here and it should be worked out weeks in advance with the venue. Where portraits happen if it is raining, how the timeline shifts, and whether there is covered space large enough are all questions to settle early rather than on the day.

Rescheduling

If we call it off, we reschedule promptly and without argument. Nobody benefits from pictures taken in conditions that were not going to work, and we would rather move a session than deliver a set neither of us is happy with.
