Renting Camera Gear in South Georgia: What to Know First

Until recently, renting a cinema camera in this part of Georgia meant a drive to a big city or a shipping box. We keep an inventory of cameras, lenses, lighting, audio, drones and event equipment at the studio in Douglas, and it goes out to creators across South Georgia. Here is how to make a rental go well.

When renting makes more sense than buying

• You have one project that needs a better camera or a specific lens than you own.
• You want to try a body or a lens before spending on it.
• You need a second camera for a wedding or an event and do not need one the rest of the year.
• You need lighting or audio for a single shoot and have nowhere to store it afterward.
• You are a student or new shooter building skills before building a kit.

What to check before you take it out

1. 1.Batteries are charged and you know how many you have. Cinema cameras eat batteries.
2. 2.Memory cards are the right type and speed for the camera and are formatted in that body.
3. 3.The lens mount matches the camera. It sounds obvious. It is the most common mismatch.
4. 4.You have the cables and adapters for your monitor or audio recorder.
5. 5.You have turned the camera on and recorded ten seconds before you leave. Do this in the shop, not on location.

Drones specifically

A drone rental comes with the legal side attached. Flying commercially requires a licensed pilot, and airspace around airports is restricted. If the footage is for a client, a listing, or anything you will be paid for, it is usually simpler to book our drone services with a pilot than to rent the aircraft. For a personal project, ask and we will talk through it.

Taking care of it

Rain, sand and drops are the three things that end a rental badly. South Georgia has plenty of the first. Keep a rain cover in the bag, keep lens caps on between setups, and never set a camera on a truck tailgate. Bring it back clean and on time and you will be welcome to rent again.

Matching the gear to the job

The most expensive camera in the catalog is not always the right one. A wedding needs two bodies that handle low light and long batteries. A product shoot needs one body, a macro lens and controlled lighting. A short film needs a cinema camera, a set of matched lenses and grip to shape the light. A podcast needs microphones and a recorder and almost nothing else. Tell us what you are shooting and we will suggest a kit rather than just filling the order, because the wrong kit at the right price is still the wrong kit.
